Winnipeg Blues

The Yellowhead Chiefs were up against the league’s elite this past week, travelling to Winnipeg to face the first-place Winnipeg Bruins before returning home to host the second-place Winnipeg Wild. Despite flashes of pushback, the Chiefs dropped both contests and now turn their attention to a season-ending home-and-home with the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Bruins Pull Away in Winnipeg

Thursday night at Southdale Community Centre, the Chiefs struck first but couldn’t contain the Bruins’ offensive surge in a 7–1 loss.

Ethan Turchinski opened the scoring just 3:27 into the first period, finishing a play set up by Espenell and Richmond to give Yellowhead an early 1–0 lead. The Chiefs held that advantage through the remainder of the opening frame despite being outshot 20–7.

The game turned in the second period. Winnipeg erupted for four goals in a span of just over five minutes, including a power-play marker, to seize control. The third period saw more of the same as the Bruins added three more, capitalizing twice on the man advantage.

Goaltender Landon McGregor faced a heavy workload, stopping 54 of 61 shots in a performance that kept the score from tilting even further. The Bruins finished with a commanding 61–21 edge in shots, while going 2-for-7 on the power play.

It was a physical, penalty-filled contest, but against the league’s top club (39-3-1-2), the margin for error was slim.

Wild Capitalize in Shoal Lake

Back on home ice Sunday at Shoal Lake Communiplex, the Chiefs looked to rebound but fell 7–2 to the Wild. Winnipeg built a 2–0 first-period lead before the Chiefs responded early in the second. Just 32 seconds in, Nolan Kozak buried his 27th of the season from Lepp and McNish to cut the deficit in half. After the Wild answered with a shorthanded goal and another at even strength, Grady McNish notched his 23rd of the year at 16:24 of the second to keep things within reach at 4–2. However, Winnipeg struck again less than a minute later and added two more in the third to seal it. Wallin turned aside 43 of 50 shots as the Wild held a 50–27 advantage in shots. Neither team converted on the power play.

Looking Ahead: Final Home-and-Home

The Chiefs (18-27-1-0) currently sit ninth in the U18 AAA standings with two games remaining. Next weekend marks the final chapter of the regular season — a home-and-home with the third-place Brandon Wheat Kings (36-6-0-3).

Yellowhead travels to the J&G Arena Friday night before hosting their season finale Sunday in Shoal Lake.

With the Wheat Kings riding a 9-0-0-1 run in their last 10, the challenge is significant. But for the Chiefs, it’s an opportunity to measure themselves once more against one of the league’s best and to close out the season on home ice with pride and momentum.

Chiefs fans, let’s pack the Communiplex one more time and send the boys off the right way.
