WEDNESDAY IN SOURIS – CHIEFS SHORT-HANDED IN ROAD LOSS

Southwest Cougars 4, Yellowhead Chiefs 2

The week opened with a rugged matchup in Souris that left Yellowhead shorthanded both on the ice and in the lineup. The game turned costly when Destin Knight and Bryce Gambler were both forced out due to injury. Knight’s upper-body issue will keep him out for an extended period, while Gambler would miss Saturday but make a determined return Sunday.

On the scoresheet, the Chiefs struck first. Alec Strachan buried his 11th of the year just 4:23 in, and after Southwest equalized in the second, Wyatt Njegovan responded to restore the lead.

But the Cougars pressed relentlessly—outshooting Yellowhead 42–18—and pulled away late with a pair of goals just 12 seconds apart in the third. Goaltender Landon McGregor was brilliant despite the loss, turning aside 38 shots to keep his team in it.

SATURDAY IN SHOAL LAKE – CHIEFS SURGE IN THE SECOND FOR BIG HOME WIN

Yellowhead Chiefs 4, Central Plains Capitals 2

The Chiefs found their stride on home ice Saturday, coming alive with a three-goal second period to earn a much-needed win. Starter Sawyer Wallin posted 51 saves before leaving the game due to injury. His status remains uncertain, and he was unable to dress for Sunday’s contest.

Offensively, the Njegovan–McNish combination was electric.

  • Njegovan tied the game early in the second.

  • McNish followed with the go-ahead goal.

  • Oliver Nickel finished off for a 3–1 lead.

A late Central Plains push made it tight, but Strachan sealed the win with an empty-netter—his 12th of the season, With Wallin out, McGregor stepped in late and shut the door to preserve the victory.

SUNDAY SHOOTOUT THRILLER – CHIEFS EDGE NORMAN FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

Yellowhead Chiefs 3, Norman Northstars 2 (SO)

With Wallin unavailable and the Chiefs dressing a thin roster, Yellowhead showed grit and composure to gut out a shootout win against Norman.

Norman built a 2–0 lead behind a pair from Noseworthy, but the Chiefs clawed back:

  • Strachan beat the tender in the second off a Kozak lead pass.

  • Ethan Turchinski tied the game early in the third.

McGregor was outstanding again, making 39 saves and stopping five of six shooters in the shootout. Brody Bohemier and Lepp delivered the goals that secured the extra point.

STANDINGS SNAPSHOT

At 9-9-0-0, the Chiefs sit 9th in the crowded middle of the league—one point back of Eastman and firmly in the playoff conversation. Despite the grind of injuries and a heavy schedule, their .500 record keeps them well within striking distance of the teams ahead.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Chiefs now enjoy a lighter week with just one game:
Friday, November 22 – Southwest Cougars @ Yellowhead Chiefs (Shoal Lake)

With Knight out and uncertainty around Wallin’s availability, bench depth will again be tested—but this team has shown in back-to-back games that resilience is becoming a defining part of their identity.
