Selection Camp

Head Coach Hann Street outlines a drill at selection camp.

The Yellowhead Chiefs are charging ahead in their quest to build a competitive squad for the 2024-25 season! The excitement began with a selection camp on August 27th and 28th, featuring an ID skate, and culminated in a weekend of intense intersquad games. Over 50 talented players hit the ice, but as the dust settled, tough decisions were made, cutting the roster down to roughly half. Now, the Chiefs’ pre-season roster is beginning to take shape.

Adding to the buzz, several returning Chiefs players have been attending camps with Junior teams at both the WHL and MJHL levels. Some have already been released back to Yellowhead, but a few are still fighting hard to earn spots on MJHL teams. It’s possible that several Chiefs will make the leap to junior hockey this season, opening up new opportunities for rising prospects to claim a spot on the U18 roster. It’s a testament to the strength and quality of the Yellowhead development system.

This week, the Chiefs will sharpen their skills in practice before heading to Souris for a thrilling three-game pre-season set. Friday, September 13, they face off against the host Southwest Cougars. On Saturday, the Chiefs will go head-to-head with the Estevan Bruins from a neighboring league, and Sunday brings a clash with the Pembina Valley Hawks. After this action-packed weekend, final cuts will be made, and the official roster will emerge.

But the pre-season fun doesn’t stop there! The newly minted team will head to Brandon on September 21 for one last warm-up against the U18 Wheat Kings. Then, the real excitement begins with the Chiefs’ regular season home opener on Sunday, September 29, when they’ll once again take on the Wheat Kings.

Get ready, Chiefs fans – it’s going to be a thrilling season ahead!
