The Yellowhead Chiefs kicked off their 2024-25 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season on Sunday, September 29, at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, with a special evening that combined excitement for the new team and a moment of reflection. Despite a 6-1 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings, the game was just the start of what promises to be a season of growth and potential.

Before the puck dropped, fans were introduced to the fresh-faced Chiefs roster, featuring many new players ready to make their mark. Following the team introductions, the Chiefs and Wheat Kings paused for a ceremonial face-off, honoring Truth and Reconciliation Day with a moving tribute that underscored the importance of reflection and respect in the community.
Once the action began, Brandon’s Michalchuk put the Wheat Kings on the board early, scoring just 2:45 into the game. But the Chiefs responded with resilience, tying the game late in the first period on a goal from forward Grady McNish at 16:46, much to the delight of the hometown crowd. Brandon reclaimed the lead with a goal in the final seconds of the period, making it 2-1 heading into the second.
The Wheat Kings’ experience showed in the middle frame, as they added two more goals, while the Chiefs struggled to create offensive opportunities. Yellowhead was limited to just three shots on goal in the period.

The third period proved challenging as penalties disrupted the Chiefs’ momentum. Brandon capitalized with two power-play goals, while Yellowhead’s goalie Rapley faced relentless pressure but stood tall, turning away 46 of 52 shots in a strong performance between the pipes.
While the final score wasn’t in the Chiefs’ favor, the team’s young roster showed grit and flashes of potential. With returning forward Alec Strachan still out due to injury, this squad is adjusting and finding its rhythm. As they grow and gel, the future looks bright for this group.

Up next, the Chiefs take on the Southwest Cougars on Wednesday, October 2, a team still searching for its first win of the season. This presents a prime opportunity for Yellowhead to regroup and aim for their first victory.
With a new season just underway and plenty of talent on the roster, fans can look forward to exciting hockey and the evolution of this promising team. The Chiefs’ journey has only just begun!
